Manchester United are enduring a topsy-turvy campaign so far, having been strikingly consistent for the entirety of Erik ten Hag’s maiden year.

The Dutchman was immediately put under pressure in his first season when the campaign kicked off with two straight defeats but he arrested that unfortunate start to produce United’s best season in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

United finished third in the Premier League and also ended their six-year wait for silverware after beating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

Supporters are hoping that the first bit of silverware in many years will act as a springboard for further success and now, speaking recently, defender Diogo Dalot has revealed he discussed just this with team-mate Rapahel Varane.

“I remember saying to Rapha [Varane] after when we were up there lifting the trophy ‘we have to come back here, we have to win again, we have to win more,'” Dalot told the official Manchester United website when asked about putting his hands on the trophy for the first time.

“Because it was really special from up there to see all the fans celebrating and everybody, the [United] half of the stadium was full. That feeling of winning is something indescribable.”

Undeniably, it was a moment to remember in relation to the season but its significance is often overlooked if you don’t build on winning the Carabao Cup.

Unfortunately,  United will not be able to defend their title in another final this season after they were sent packing at the second time of asking in this year’s edition.
