Bruno Fernandes won’t give up Champions League hopes

Manchester United have their work cut out if they are to reach the Champions League last-16.

Bruno Fernandes didn’t shock anyone last night when he said the mood in the Manchester United dressing room ‘is not the best’ after yet another ‘disappointing’ defeat.

The Reds have already lost nine games this season, while only managing to win eight, but last night’s 4-3 defeat against FC Copenhagen puts our Champions League hopes at risk.

As a result, United sit at the bottom of Group A with just three points from four matches.

Copenhagen scored twice in two minutes after Marcus Rashford’s red card, which meant the scoreline was 2-2 at half-time. The Danish champions went on to win the match 4-3.

Speaking after the match, Fernandes was asked by MUTV to give an insight into the mood of the dressing room after losing such an important match.

“Disappointment,” Fernandes said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “I think for everything we did in the game, we could and should have gotten something. It is difficult at the moment, obviously, and the mood is not the best because I think we fought so hard with ten men that even from then on it was playing against a team that plays really well on the ball, and as a part of that, many decisions went against us.

“Today was a tough day but I think the team effort was good. We tried. We could have done some things better, but it was difficult for us from thirty minutes on, playing with one player less.”

Fernandes insists United have not given up their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16, but they will need positive results against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich.

The Portugal international added: “Even before this game, that was still the belief: to win the last three games of the group stage. And now we have to. We have to win them. If we want to stay in the Champions League and stay in the best competition, we have to win against the best.

“We have a really tough game away against Galatasaray and after we play against the top of the group. We want to win both, but now we have to focus on Luton, because it is going to be a tough game again. We need three points in the league and we need to get back to the winning track after this defeat.”
