Paul Scholes concerned about the frailty of Manchester United ahead of Copenhagen clash

Manchester United travel to Copenhagen on Wednesday night and it’s a must-win clash if we want to reach the Champions League knockout rounds, but club legend Paul Scholes is worried about the frailty of Erik ten Hag’s players.

It would be fair to say Scholes is less than convinced that United can get a result in Copenhagen, despite beating the Danish champions 1-0 at Old Trafford. That win took us to three points after losing our opening two games against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the Champions League group stage.

Furthermore, United’s 1-0 win over Copenhagen wasn’t convincing either as it took a last-gasp penalty save by Andre Onana to secure the three points. We need to be a lot better tonight to quieten at hostile atmosphere in Denmark.

When asked if he was backing United to make the last-16 in the Champions League, Scholes told TNT Sports (via The Mirror): “If I was a betting man, I’d say no. They showed last year they’re frail in away games, you think of Sevilla away. It was a brilliant atmosphere, it was hostile, they crumbled, they couldn’t handle it.”

Scholes added: “It makes me worry about going to Copenhagen, who aren’t a brilliant team but they’re organised. I don’t know if there’s the character and fighters in that team to be able to cope with a big atmosphere.

“It’s so hard going to Copenhagen, these European away games are tough. If they make it a hostile atmosphere, you have to worry about the frailty of Manchester United – they could really crumble under that pressure.”

It’s do or bust for a lot of these players tonight. They shouldn’t need reminding that a place in the next round is at risk, after such a slow start to the campaign, but we will soon see how much it means to them to be playing in the Champions League.

Nobody at United wants to be drop back into the Europa League.
