Manchester United’s Mary Earps made history at the Ballon d’Or awards on Monday when she became the highest-ranked goalkeeper in the Feminin category.
Earps finished fifth-placed in the race for the prestigious accolade; Fridolina Rolfo finished fourth, Salma Paralluelo third, Sam Kerr second, and Barcelona starlet Aitana Bonmati claimed the top spot.
After yet another scintillating season for both club and country, it’s unsurprising to see Earps secure such a high finish. She played a pivotal role for United in their Women’s Super League campaign and in reaching the FA Cup final, and for England, was crucial to Sarina Wiegman’s side getting to the World Cup final, in which she also saved a spot-kick.
Earps etching legendary status
In both the league and the World Cup, the 30-year-old was awarded the Golden Glove to add to an illustrious honours list that includes the Euros, Finalissima and Arnold Clark Cup (x2).
Last night’s recognition also comes a year on from Earps being named FIFA’s Best Women’s Goalkeeper in 2022.
