Erik ten Hag wants Manchester United to seek inspiration from legends

After a difficult weekend for everyone at Manchester United following the death of Sir Bobby Charlton, Erik ten Hag has urged his players to seek inspiration from the club’s Holy Trinity.

The Holy Trinity consists of three legendary players — George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton — and Erik ten Hag believes his players can take inspiration from them ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League encounter against Galatasaray.

Best, Law and Charlton were immortalised in a bronze statue that was unveiled in 2008.

“He is in front of Old Trafford with Denis Law and George Best,” Ten Hag told reporters, as per the Manchester Evening News. “He is always with us. They are always a huge inspiration for us every day and every game.

“First, we want to win to tribute Sir Bobby Charlton but also you always want to do that in a certain way and that is what we are aiming for. But it is not always possible in football. Sometimes you don’t play that well but then still you have find a way to win. I was happy Saturday that we could show a tribute but by the way we scored the goal.

“It’s always special every night at Old Trafford, the fans are so behind us, there’s a strong bond. Remember the last home game against Brentford, even when the game is not going in our direction, they stayed behind us. In moments of difficulty and moments of adversity around Manchester United, the fans are still with us and we are fighting together.

“Definitely tomorrow, with the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, their hero, their legend, their giant, I am sure there will be an even more emotional evening tomorrow night.

“Bobby was a legend, a giant, not only for Manchester United but for modern football and so his legacy, what he left, were the standards, the high standards we have to live here every day.

“First of all, our thoughts are with his family, with his wife, with his children and his grandchildren but also what he meant for Manchester United, the importance for Manchester United, the standards he set, the last couple of days, they were emphasised in the last couple of days.”

Charlton passed away at the age of 86 on Saturday and United are expected to pay their respects ahead of both games against Copenhagen and Man City to be held at Old Trafford.

Law paid tribute to Charlton over the weekend and said it was a “dream” to share the pitch with the World Cup winner.

United beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane just hours after the news of Charlton’s death flooded through. Diogo Dalot’s winner secured three points and Harry Maguire dedicated the win to Charlton.
