Manchester United told they must stump up £60m to sign Premier League star

Manchester United will look to sign a long-term centre-back option in the near future, with most of Erik ten Hag’s options approaching the end of their primes.

Lisandro Martinez is the youngest centre-back on the books and the Argentine is likely to be a pillar in the side for years to come but there is no obvious contender for his partner.

Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace defender, has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most promising young centre-backs and his status has been elevated after he became a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England setup.

Guehi came up through the ranks at Chelsea before eventually joining Palace and now, it is being reported that a number of clubs are monitoring his progress at Selhurst Park.

United are said to be among those clubs but if they are to make a move, it would set them back a whopping £60m. That’s according to Football Insider, who say that Ten Hag is looking at options to bolster his backline due to the serious injury problems his first-choice defenders have endured.

Any move for Guehi would have to wait until next summer as the defender will prioritise making the England squad for next summer’s European Championship.

Guehi will have two years remaining on his contract at Palace by that point, which would force the London club into a decision on his future.

There is also a possibility that he opts to extend his stay at Selhurst Park and that would almost certainly rule out any move next summer.
