Erik ten Hag confident that one injured player will return in time to face Manchester City

Erik ten Hag has provided some insight into Casemiro’s injury setback and when he will return to action.

The midfielder departed to represent his native Brazil over the international break in their double-header of World Cup qualifiers but was withdrawn early in the first fixture against Venezuela due to an ankle injury, and left the pitch hobbling.

Casemiro’s issue kept him out of the national team’s training sessions over the weekend but despite being unfit, he was deployed from the get-go in the following match versus Uruguay.

It was then confirmed shortly after that he would miss Manchester United’s clash with Sheffield United this weekend due to the minor injury, which raised eyebrows over his involvement on Wednesday, as he had already sustained said problem.

Still, Ten Hag won’t hold any grudges over Fernando Diniz’s coaching and tactical decisions – though the Old Trafford faithful may harbour reservations.

The Dutchman said (via BeanymanSports): You can’t be [unhappy that Casemiro played the second qualifier]. That is the rules. He’s playing for a nation and he’s playing for us. And we all understand that Casemiro is a soldier and he is available for every game. So he will always give his best, for his nation and for Manchester United.”

He added: “In the first game, he came off, but then he played the second game. It was an important game. But, yeah, I’m sure that game didn’t help him. But it’s a small injury and he will return next week. It will be healed. And then he’s ready for our next [league] game, I’m sure.”
