Manchester United make decision on midfielder’s future ahead of January window

There are a number of players with uncertain futures at Manchester United, with midfielder Scott McTominay being one of them after a mixed start to the season.

There are three or four players ahead of McTominay in Erik ten Hag’s pecking order and going into the recent summer transfer window, it was expected that he would leave if a replacement was signed.

United did not sign a central midfielder until the very final day, making it difficult for United to sanction any sale despite supposed interest from West Ham and Newcastle.

Now, just days after his stoppage-time heroics secured three much-needed three points against Brentford, it has been reported that United have made their mind up on McTominay’s future.

That’s according to the Daily Star, who say that United have made the decision not to sell McTominay in January, with Ten Hag ruling out the possibility.

As per the report, McTominay is becoming far too important for Ten Hag to part ways with and will thus remain at the club until next year at the earliest.

McTominay is under contract for two more years and United have the option of extending his deal for an additional year, potentially keeping him at the club until 2026.

There are also fitness concerns over some of the other midfielders at the club, with Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat both missing games due to injury so far this season.

Casemiro has become the latest casualty of injury this season after he hobbled off Brazil’s 1-1 draw against Venezuela with an ankle problem.

McTominay is likely to start in the next game against Sheffield United after his jaw-dropping 10-minute cameo against Brentford and the Scotland international will be keen on cementing a place in the side.
