Tim Sherwood gives scathing assessment of Manchester United defender

Tim Sherwood claims Raphael Varane has done nothing of note since joining Manchester United from Real Madrid in July 2021.

Manchester United are enduring a tough season under Erik ten Hag and a lot of pundits are trying to pin holes in the team to explain why it’s been such a slow start.

Personally, I wouldn’t look too far beyond the fact we’ve been so unlucky on the injury front. And, when it comes to our defence, it has been depleted to the point Ten Hag has been without a left-back for several weeks.

Signing Varane was a huge coup for United, but the 30-year-old has struggled with injuries since the transfer. This season his form has dipped, but Victor Lindelof’s performances haven’t helped nor has Lisandro Martinez’s injury.

Varane missed the recent 2-1 win over Brentford and Sherwood believes the Frenchman needs to do more if United are to win more trophies. The World Cup-winner was part of last season’s squad that won the Carabao Cup.

“For me, Varane (gets) away with it,” Sherwood told Premier League Productions, as quoted by The Mirror. “He has not done anything since he’s been at that football club. We talk about (Bukayo) Saka when people say, ‘Consecutive games, he needs a rest, he needs a rest’.

“This boy (Varane) is in, he’s out, he’s injured again. I think there’s no durability there. What’s he done for Manchester United? I think there are far too many of them (not doing enough). But we’re alright getting on the back of Harry Maguire, we’ll a little pop at him.”

Varane is arguably our best defender – when fit – but I think we’re missing Martinez alongside him. In a big way, too.
