Kobbie Mainoo was absent in a behind-closed-doors friendly between Manchester United and Barnsley on Tuesday.

The young midfielder was due to play against the League One outfit, however, the Daily Mail claims United decided the game came a little too soon for him.

Mainoo, 18, impressed in pre-season but injured his left ankle in a clash with Real Madrid. He trained with his team-mates ahead of last week’s Champions League defeat against Galatasaray but is expected to be available for selection on matchdays soon.

Loanee left-back Sergio Reguilon missed the last four matches for United due to injury, although it is understood he played against Barnsley. Erik ten Hag is currently without a fit left-back and that has caused problems in recent weeks.

The team that faced Barnsley was full of U21 players. The game was arranged for players returning from injury to get some minutes under their belt.

Hopefully we’ll see Mainoo back in action soon.
