Paul Scholes pointed the finger at Raphael Varane on Tuesday night as Manchester United fell to another defeat in the Champions League against Galatasaray.
The former Manchester United midfielder admitted he is “worried” about Varane.
United took the lead twice on the night before collapsing on both occasions due to sluggish defending and mind-boggling goalkeeping from Andre Onana.
Galatasaray enjoyed a 3-2 win which led to boos ringing around Old Trafford as the Reds suffered their sixth defeat in 10 matches so far this season. Erik ten Hag knows it’s not good enough and it represents our worst start to a campaign for 37 years.
Scholes pointed out Varane’s role in the United side and said he’s concerned about his fitness at the moment. Ten Hag hardly risked bring him back knowing he wasn’t fully fit, but it could also be a problem with match sharpness. The only way to tackle that is by playing football matches.
“I do worry about Varane a bit,” Scholes told TNT Sports, as quoted by The Mirror. “I know he’s been one of the very best defenders around, just like Rio was, in that same like at Real Madrid, but I feel like his legs are looking a little bit sluggish. He’s a bit unfit, and I’d be really worried about him.”
I think most United fans are worried about Varane because of the amount of injury spells he’s had since joining the club. With Lisandro Martinez out for the next few months, we can’t afford to lose the Frenchman anytime soon.
The defence doesn’t need to be weakened again.
As things stand, United sit at the bottom of Group A with zero points after two matches. Next up in the group stages for United is Copenhagen.
