Erik ten Hag hails Sergio Reguilon for playing despite illness

Sergio Reguilon came off in the latter stages of Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Burnley after appearing to pull up with a hamstring strain.

The Spaniard was replaced after 79 minutes by Raphael Varane, with the Frenchman returning from injury, while Erik ten Hag said nothing about a potential injury for Reguilon after the match.

“Reguilon was ill,” Ten Hag told TNT Sports, as quoted by the Metro. “That tells something about character and spirit they want to show.

“He was ill but wanted to play, wanted to support and contribute for the team.”

It could be that Ten Hag is deflecting or keeping his cards close to his chest on the matter, but the manager did reveal that the full-back was actually struggling with illness before the game.

Ten Hag hailed Reguilon for getting on with it, battling through it when United needed him and perform on the day. As the manager alluded to, it says a lot about his character after joining the club on loan. Those are the types of players we want wearing the shirt – so long as they’re available and of the required standard, and Reguilon has done well thus far.

I just hope he isn’t ruled out with an injury.

We can’t afford anymore injury setbacks.
