Match report: United suffer third consecutive loss in Germany despite late comeback

Manchester United fell short in Germany this evening by sustaining a 4-3 loss in their Champions League group-stage opener.

Former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a strike that troubled Andre Onana and bundled under the goalkeeper, leaving him with his head in his hands after an early howler.

Serge Gnabry quickly doubled Bayern’s lead just four minutes later, which was unfortunate as prior to the goals, United had overseen a positive start.

Rasmus Hojlund registered his first-ever goal as a Red when he halved the deficit after the interval – much to the away fans’ delight, but Christian Eriksen’s handball forced the referee to study the pitchside VAR monitor and award the Germans a spot-kick. It was subsequently converted by Harry Kane in the 53rd minute.

Casemiro’s late brace

A late comeback was inspired by Casemiro, who managed to net a brace. His first contribution came in regular time but was immediately counter-acted by Mathys Tel’s 92nd-minute goal.

The Brazilian then turned the ball in from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick in injury-time, before the ref blew full-time on the 4-3 tie.

There’s a lot to take from United’s showing tonight but ultimately, three successive losses is incredibly tough to take. It is also the first time since 1978 that the side has conceded three times in three consecutive games. Work to be done.

  1. Musiala handles the ball as he beats Dalot in the penalty area, just before his pass to Gnabry for the second goal. Dalot is on the wrong side so doesn’t see it and doesn’t appeal. It happens so quickly that the MUTV pundits don’t pick up on it either. But the close up replay clearly shows the ball bounce up, hitting Musiala’s right hand, which he then instinctively pulls away after the ball makes contact – much like the reaction we see from Eriksen when his hand touches the ball for the Bayern penalty.
