Andre Onana nominated for Best Fifa Men’s Goalkeeper award

Andre Onana has been nominated for the men’s goalkeeper of the year at the Best Fifa Awards.

The Cameroonian is one of the five goalkeepers shortlisted by a panel of experts based on player achievements from 19 December 2022 to 20 August 2023.

Onana is listed along with fellow goalkeeper nominees that include Al-Hilial’s Yassine Bounou, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, Man City’s Ederson and Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Prior to Onana’s summer move to United, he was part of Simone Inzaghi’s Inter side that won two major trophies last season, claiming the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia.

Inter were also Champions League finalists, losing 1-0 to Man City.

Pep Guardiola spoke about facing Onana ahead of the final, saying (via Manchester Evening News): “For the way they play, with the high press, Onana is an exceptional goalkeeper to take the position to build up. Really, really good.”

Onana made 41 appearances for Inter in what was his first and only season at the Italian club. However, Onana did not play in any of Inter’s domestic cup finals, with Inzaghi opting for second-choice Samir Handanovic instead.

Manchester United fans will hope that Onana can replicate the form he showed not just for Inter, but Ajax when he in Amsterdam under Erik ten Hag for the first time and they enjoyed success together.
