Spider-Man star Tom Holland has spoken in support of Harry Maguire after more criticism has been sent the defender’s way.
Last night was perhaps one to forget for the ex-Manchester United captain; despite England overseeing a 3-1 win to longtime rivals Scotland at Hampden Park, Maguire registered the Scots’ only goal after deflecting the ball into his own net.
It came after his entrance into the game at half-time was met with jeers from the home fans, which only increased after the own-goal. They soon quietened down after Harry Kane’s winner, though.
Maguire, 30, just can’t seem to catch a break at the moment and it’s a shame to see his confidence drop with every outing. Rival fans are always going to give him stick, but it should never be coming from his own supporters.
Holland lauds Maguire
Holland weighed in on the matter today, saying (via Football Daily): “Look, I think being a professional athlete is incredibly tough, you’re under pressure every time you step onto the field. I admire the fact that he steps on there no matter what people are saying. He tries his best, he plays his best game.
“I think he’s a great player, he’s been a huge asset to England over the years,” the actor continued. “Yes, he made a mistake last night but he had to put his foot out, he can’t let a ball like that come through the box. Those things happen in football. I really admire Harry, he seems like a really nice guy.”
