Erik ten Hag gives worrying explanation for Jadon Sancho’s absence vs Arsenal

Erik ten Hag has delivered a worrying explanation for Jadon Sancho’s absence against Arsenal on Sunday after the winger was left out of the travelling squad.

It was revealed on Saturday evening that Sancho had not made the trip with the rest of the squad, with supporters assuming he had picked up a knock in training.

Sancho has started the season in promising form, coming off the bench to help United on a number of occasions but he has not started any game yet.

Now, speaking after United succumbed to a devastating injury-time defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, Ten Hag has revealed that Sancho missed the game due to his performances in training.

“On his performance on training we didn’t select him,” Ten Hag said about Sancho after the game, according to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell.

“You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United. You can make choices in the front line, so in this game he wasn’t selected.”

Sancho has endured two highly turbulent years since he joined the club from Borussia Dortmund and he was even put on an individual training programme for two months last season.

The latest setback is not a surprise to supporters as Sancho’s attitude on the pitch and in training has been a public topic for several years.

Sancho’s career has stagnated since he joined United and Ten Hag seems to have run out of patience with the England star – hopefully this is merely a blip in what could still be a strong season for the winger.
