Jonny Evans re-signs for Manchester United on one-year contract

Manchester United have confirmed that Jonny Evans has signed a one-year contract until June 2024.

The Manchester United academy graduate returned to the club earlier this summer to work on his fitness during the pre-season tour in the United States.

In his previous spell at Old Trafford, the 35-year-old won three Premier League titles, two League Cups and the Champions League.

Evans made 198 appearances for the first time during that period.

The centre-back left Leicester City at the end of last season when his contract expired.

Speaking about his return to United, Evans told club media (via ManUtd.com): “I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home. This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years-old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad.

“I’ve really enjoyed working under the manager and his coaching staff since the start of pre-season, and I’m looking forward to helping this group achieve success together at this fantastic football club.”

Football director John Murtough added: “Jonny is a winner who has experienced everything in the game. These characteristics are invaluable to the culture that we’re building here.

“His attitude and work ethic are second to none and Erik and the coaching staff know he’s someone they can rely on whenever needed this season. We all welcome Jonny back and hope he can add further achievements to the success he has already enjoyed with the club.”

The Northern Irishman becomes United’s third acquisition on a busy deadline day following the arrivals of Altay Bayindir and Sergio Reguilon.

It is believed that injuries to Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw made the decision a lot easier for United, although it has been known for some time that Evans would be kept on.
