United target Chelsea and Spurs outcasts in bid to replace Luke Shaw by transfer deadline

Manchester United are mulling over moves for either Marc Cucurella of Chelsea or Sergio Reguilon of Tottenham Hotspur, as per Manchester Evening News.

Any new arrivals in defence would be stop-gap signings to fill in for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, who are both sidelined with long-term injuries, so United’s pursuit may be on a loan basis.

Yesterday, the Red Devils oversaw a triumphant comeback to win 3-2 against Nottingham Forest after conceding two early goals. Erik ten Hag opted to play Diogo Dalot out of position and on the left flank as opposed to calling on youngster Alvaro Fernandez; he is a natural left-back but has little senior experience and is yet to make his first-team debut.

Cucurella, 25, cost Chelsea £62 million last year in a move from Brighton and Hove Albion but has fallen down the pecking order upon Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival, as he prefers Ben Chilwell. Consequently, Cucurella is yet to feature for the club this season and has spent the first three matches watching on from the bench.

Similarly, 26-year-old Reguilon has not featured for Spurs since April 2022. He spent last season on loan with Atletico Madrid and is not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans, however, his salary expectations may prove ‘too steep’ for United.
