Rene Meulensteen spent six years as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant coach at Manchester United and witnessed first hand what it was like to deal with the Glazer family.
There has been nothing but controversy surrounding the ownership of Manchester United for the past 18-years.
Now, nine months on from when the Glazer family said they were open to offers for United, fans are waiting for a sale to take place.
Bids from Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have remained on the table as the owners prepare to reach a decision on the future of the Premier League club.
Meulensteen has an interesting take on the potential takeover having worked as first team coach at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2013.
“I hope there is some clarity for everyone and the fans,” Meulensteen said on The Debrief podcast. “Hopefully the owners that come in are the right ones, with the right vision and ideas to take the club forward over the coming years.
“You need to look at what they’ve (Glazers) constructively done in terms of helping the club financially, helping the managers… I don’t think there’s an issue there. Correct me if I’m wrong but they’ve spent more than £1 billion since Sir Alex Ferguson’s left. So, managers had the support to bring players in, and Ten Hag has had it this year as well.
“The biggest issue is that there’s been a lack of communication, a lack of transparency and emotional attachment. There’s no fan that can associate themselves with the owners by saying ‘they are great and care for the club’. There’s none of that.
“The Glazers made a very clever move back then by buying Manchester United because they knew what sort of brand they could build it into and what sort of money would be involved.”
