Jamie Carragher has sent a warning to Manchester United midfielder Casemiro after his poor display against Wolves.

Manchester United started their Premier League campaign with an underwhelming performance but Erik ten Hag’s side still managed to secure three points.

It was a night to forget for a number of players, especially our midfield, as Wolves found it too easy to launch attacks by driving through the middle of the pitch.

The main reason for this came from how Mason Mount was pushed further forward with Bruno Fernandes, therefore, leaving Casemiro isolated in front of defence.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has singled out Casemiro for criticism, even going as far to predict more poor performances from the Brazilian this season.

“I have a feeling at some stage, Casemiro is going to get really exposed,” Carragher said, as quoted by The Mirror.

Gary Neville has concerns about United’s midfield, too, and it is something we can expect to be addressed in the coming weeks.

“Manchester United’s midfield was non-existent, it emptied,” Neville added. “It was a concern. If you watched Man Utd in pre-season, leaving Casemiro on his own when Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes go forward, it looks great. But you’ve got to have a balance. And the front three don’t really work hard enough in a defensive sense.

“That would have been a real worry because Wolves have got a new manager only four days ago and a lot of misery around how their season may end up, but they’ve been brilliant tonight.”

It will be interesting to see if Ten Hag signs another midfielder this summer. We could do with someone renowned for their defensive qualities, to act as cover or play alongside Casemiro. United have been linked with Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat and Everton’s Amadou Onana.

I have no doubt in my mind that Casemiro will be back to his best in the coming weeks.

  1. Any doubts one might have are always eased by an ex-Liverpool player having a go. Carragher clearly hasn’t learned from the opprobrium directed at Martinez, and will look just as foolish as the season unfolds.
Listen, Scousers, we do get it: you thought we’d “ always be in your shadow”. But we never were, we’re not now, and we won’t be in the future. Your pain is going to be added to, but for surely it shouldn’t be your ex-players doing the adding.
