Manchester United defender weighing up loan to Amiens

Manchester United academy graduate Teden Mengi is set to leave Manchester United on loan this summer.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Mengi is weighing up a move to France after receiving a loan bid from Amiens SC.

It’s hardly the most flattering offer because Amiens play in France’s second tier, but it is an opportunity for Mengi to face a new challenge abroad.

Sources have told the MEN that it’s thought the physicality of continental football suit the centre-back as he looks to make his injury problems a thing of the past.

Respected transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano ran a similar line on Wednesday, tweeting: “EXCL: Manchester United centre back Teden Mengi has received loan bid from French side Amiens. Discussions taking place now between all parties involved.”

Mengi was handed his senior debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against LASK in the Europa League in August 2020. Since then, the 21-year-old has had loan spells with Derby County and Birmingham City, but now he needs to push on and really prove himself as a first-team regular.

With the option of another year on Mengi’s contract, United will not panic when it comes to making a definite decision on his future at the club. The defender’s current deal expires in the summer of 2024 and another loan move will help Ten Hag and the coaching staff come to a conclusion.

If Mengi is unable to prove himself in France’s second tier, what chance does he have of pushing Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane out of the team? That’s the standard at Old Trafford.

Hopefully – whenever he goes – it will be an injury-free season for Mengi!
