Manchester United Women’s trio progress to World Cup quarter-finals with Lionesses

Manchester United Women’s Lionesses trio of Mary Earps, Katie Zelem and Ella Toone have progressed to the World Cup quarter-finals.

England faced Nigeria at 8.30am BST this morning in their round of 16 tie and play has only just concluded in Brisbane.

120 minutes worth of action was not enough to separate the sides, with Nigeria unable to capitalise on Lauren James’ 87th-minute red card leaving the Lionesses short on the pitch.

Sarina Wiegman’s side netted four penalties to Nigeria’s two in the shootout, booking their slot in the next stage of the tournament and keeping their dreams of holding both the World Cup and Euros trophies alive.

They will face the winners of Colombia vs. Jamaica on Saturday, August 12.

Reds on international duty

As for the Reds, Earps started the tie between the sticks and kept a clean sheet while Zelem entered the fray in the closing stages of extra time. Toone was an unused substitute.
