Gianluigi Buffon retirement: Manchester United duo hail Italian legend

Two Manchester United players were quick to pay tribute to Italian icon Gianluigi Buffon, who was recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in world football throughout his career.

Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon has announced his retirement, hanging up his football boots and gloves after an incredible playing career.

Buffon, who made his debut in 1995, started and finished his career at Parma. He made 176 appearances for the Italy national team and won the World Cup in 2006.

Throughout his career Buffon faced United three times — once in 2003 in the Champions League and twice during Buffon’s time at Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was the first player at Old Trafford to pay tribute to Buffon. The new signing shared a picture via Instagram alongside the Italian, referring to him as ‘Eterno’, meaning ‘Eternal’.

Bruno Fernandes was next to share a warm message in reaction to Buffon’s retirement. He wrote: “A true football legend! Congratulations on your great and exciting career.”
