Andre Onana explains furious reaction with Harry Maguire after Borussia Dortmund friendly

Andre Onana was seen having very stern words with Harry Maguire after a sloppy mistake was almost punished by Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.

Manchester United lost the game 3-2 due to sloppy defending, but Onana wasn’t introduced until half-time when the Germans had already scored twice.

Onana was spotted storming out of his goal to lambast Maguire after a poor pass led to the keeper facing two shots.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Onana clarified the situation by stressing he gets on well with Maguire.

“I try to demand a lot from him because I know he is a good player,” Onana told MUTV, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“He’s one of the captains of the team. He’s big, he’s good with the ball so I will demand him a lot. He’s a great guy. I have a good relationship with him.

“He has to be ready because when I’m on the ball I demand to everyone a lot – I start with myself because we are in this together. Mistakes come but we don’t have to be afraid to make mistakes because this is a part of life and we learn from the mistakes.”

He added: “We have to be very critical with ourselves. If we want to win prizes we have to demand a lot. It’s a big honour to be here and I’m very happy to work with these guys – Harry is a fantastic player so we will move on.”

For the 12 years we had David de Gea, I can’t think of many times he came off his line to scream at defenders. He was much more calm between the sticks.

But with Onana we can definitely expect things to speed up. He doesn’t take any prisoners and has been a welcome addition to the team.

Onana played two games for United in the US and the team will now return to Manchester for more preparations ahead of the new season.

When asked about his performances for United, Onana said: “It’s a big thing. It’s a big responsibility, I’m very happy for my debut, my genes, my minutes. Especially the way we play and control the games.

“Unfortunately we didn’t win the last two games but it’s something we have to learn from. For me, we have to score some goals and I am confident that the work we are doing right now, we are heading in the right direction and I know everything will be fine.”
