Mason Mount names his three midfielder inspirations

Manchester United new signing Mason Mount was asked about his footballing inspirations and he named a few. To nobody’s surprise the England star didn’t include Frank Lampard.

GQ Sports interviewed a number of Manchester United players and asked them a series of questions.

Mount’s response to the question about his footballing inspirations can help demonstrate why he is so natural in midfield, and how he will play a number of different roles under Erik ten Hag once he has settled in.

Mount said: “I loved to watch Luka Modric, Xavi and [Andreas] Iniesta.”

Of course, Mount lined-up against Modric in the 2-0 defeat on Wednesday in Houston.

You can imagine that Mount modelled his game on some of these players – among others – because we already know about how he copied Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick against Portsmouth as a schoolboy.

The list also makes for good reading if Mount can become anywhere as good as those three players.

Mount, 24, has featured as an eight for United since his transfer from Chelsea this summer. It is a deeper role than the one he was deployed in at Chelsea.
