Bryan Robson gives verdict on how Manchester United can challenge City

Our friends at The Busby Babe caught up with Manchester United legend Bryan Robson in New York last week.

Captain Marvel discussed a range of topics from his own playing days to how the Reds can get back competing for the biggest honours in football.

Ultimately, that means Erik ten Hag will need to bridge the gap between United and Man City, with our rivals enjoying a lot of success in the Premier League since spending over £1 billion on transfers for Pep Guardiola.

Speaking to The Busby Babe about City’s recent dominance, Robson said: “As a club we have a lot of hard work to do because Manchester City have set really high standards, which we did in the 90s and 2000s. We’ve got to get better to challenge them, I think we are under the new manager… but we know that we need a few more players to add some more goals to the team.

“If we can achieve that, I think with the organisation and discipline the manager instils in the players, I think we can really challenge.”

Robson also noted how United made significant progress last term by winning their first piece of silverware in six years. It was Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge and the Dutchman helped restore expectations ahead of the upcoming campaign.

“To get to two cup finals, win one of the trophies, that was really good. Even though Manchester City won the treble they played more games than any other club in Europe last year.

“A little unfortunate to go a goal down in the first minute. It’s always difficult to come back, but I thought the players in the first half did really well to hold it together and get back into the game.”
