Erik ten Hag may have shown David de Gea the door at Manchester United, but the Dutchman has now shared his gratitude towards the Spaniard.

After 12-years at Old Trafford, De Gea announced that he would be leaving earlier this month.

De Gea started his career at Atletico Madrid but joined United for £18.9 million in 2011. He went on to make 545 appearances for the Reds, and recorded an impressive 190 clean sheets.

The manager has paid a classy tribute to De Gea’s “outstanding” career in an interview with club media.

“It’s massive what David has done for us and for Manchester United,” Ten Hag said, as per ManUtd.com.

“Last season he contributed so highly on our top-four position, to winning the trophy in the Carabao Cup and to reaching the final of the FA Cup.

“So, we are really grateful for what he did for us, and we highly respect him.”

Ten Hag spent the last 12 months working with De Gea, but he will now make Andre Onana his first-choice goalkeeper.

It goes without saying that De Gea was a terrific servant to the club during those years. And, like many to wear the Red shirt, he had to overcome heavy criticism at the start.

Now all eyes will be on Onana.
