Erik ten Hag identifies Andre Onana to transform his side like two other Premier League keepers

Manchester United have opened talks with Inter Milan over a proposed move for goalkeeper Andre Onana.

This seems like the first real indication from British press that the Reds are making progress on Onana, who Erik ten Hag managed at Ajax, to replace David de Gea.

The Spaniard’s contract expired at midnight last Friday, so he is no longer registered as a United player.

According to The Mirror, preliminary discussions over Onana have begun with Inter, with a formal bid expected in the coming days.

This means we will soon know whether Inter are going to price Onana out of a switch to Old Trafford, with former United defender Rio Ferdinand suggesting that could be a stumbling block in the transfer.

The report also stressed that Ten Hag has watched the way Ederson and Alisson, both of whom are able to play out from the back with their feet and a high defensive line, have transformed Man City and Liverpool.

That may explain why we are signing a goalkeeper before a centre-forward this summer. As well as the fact there’s a lack of recognised world-class strikers on the market.

We know that De Gea didn’t suit Ten Hag’s style of play. He wants his keeper to be comfortable with the ball at his feet and Onana is a player who can build out from the back as well as command his area.

People will point to shot-stopping, but Onana is well-equipped in that department too.
