Tom Huddlestone to continue role at Manchester United next season

Tom Huddlestone will remain at Manchester United for another season as player-coach for the club’s U21s next season.

The 36-year-old former Premier League midfielder took the role last summer – as Paul McShane’s replacement – to work alongside other coaches to help develop the array talent coming through at Old Trafford.

Manchester United have now confirmed that Huddlestone will remain as player-coach of the U21s ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League 2 campaign.

While I don’t think Huddlestone ever had what it took to make it at United in his prime years, it is believed his experience will benefit young players whether they kick on to first-team level with the Reds or another club.

Huddlestone is eligible to play for the U23s as one of United’s permitted over-age players.

A United statement read: “Tom Huddlestone is to continue as player-coach for Manchester United’s Under-21s. The former England international started the innovative role in the academy in August 2022, fulfilling a position previously held by Paul McShane.

“By working with the other coaches, he has been able to pass on his experience to the club’s youngsters, even during some matches when taking to the field.

“The experienced midfielder will continue to create various unique development opportunities for United’s academy players by coaching from within training sessions and driving daily standards on and off the pitch.

“Tom will continue to further his coaching skills, working alongside academy experts, to deliver an excellent programme for our players. As well as being a full England international, he has also represented Derby County, Tottenham, Wolves and Hull City in the past.”

The role should also benefit Huddlestone who may look to step into coaching at first-team level.

I can think of better clubs than Manchester United to learn your trade as a coach, especially when Erik ten Hag is manager of the first-team.
