Ten Hag now wants to replace Man UTD ace following contract debacle

Erik ten Hag has seemingly made a decision on one Manchester United player, with the Dutchman now said to be keen on replacing David de Gea between the goalposts.

Ten Hag has defended De Gea publicly this season after a series of calamitous mistakes from the Spaniard, pointing out that he did end the season with the Golden Glove award.

That prize has not been enough to earn him a new contract as of yet, however, with the former Atletico Madrid star out of contract in two weeks.

De Gea has been locked in talks with the club over a two-year extension for months but with the summer winding down, he is yet to commit his future and other goalkeepers are being linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Now, it is being claimed that Ten Hag is unconvinced by the idea of keeping De Gea as his first-choice goalkeeper and would rather sign a new frontman.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who say that although the framework of De Gea’s extension has already been agreed, Ten Hag’s hesitance is holding the deal up.

As per the report, Ten Hag’s wish of signing a new goalkeeper may have to be parked as United face financial restrictions this summer in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Other positions are said to be higher on the club’s list of priorities, with Inter’s Andre Onana and Brentford’s David Raya possibly proving to be too expensive.

The club’s hierarchy is said to prefer keeping De Gea over investing in a new goalkeeper, resulting in an apparent standoff between the club and the manager.
