John Barnes: Harry Maguire would be a ‘great’ signing for Newcastle

It feels like Harry Maguire will be on the move this summer.

The Manchester United captain lost his place in the team last season and was pushed further down the pecking order by Victor Lindelof towards the end of the season.

Throughout the 2022/23 campaign, Maguire was named on the bench 23 times in the league – only to make eight starts.

There’s a good chance the player himself will decide to move on, and I don’t think anyone at Old Trafford will try to change his mind.

Now John Barnes has claimed that with Maguire having no future at Old Trafford, Maguire would be a ‘great’ signing for Newcastle, who will be playing Champions League football next season.

Barnes told indiabetting: “I think Harry Maguire would be a great signing for Newcastle.

“He’s English, he’s a main player for the national side and he’d be a good signing for Newcastle if it comes off.

“I think Maguire can have a better time at Newcastle.

“Because of course, you look at him when he plays for England and of course Harry always plays and Gareth Southgate loves him in the team.

“It just hasn’t worked for him at Man Utd and once it doesn’t work, it’s going to be difficult for the fans to back him.

“Once he’s got this perception, no matter how well you do for England or elsewhere, it will be difficult for him to do that at Man Utd.”

This is unlikely to excite Newcastle fans because I would imagine they are satisfied with what they’ve seen from Fabian Schar and Sven Botman over the course of the season.
