This summer’s transfer window is about to open and it is becoming increasingly clear that Erik ten Hag is prioritising a move for a striker as the Dutchman looks to strengthen his frontline.
Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane have both been heavily linked with moves to Old Trafford but both players would require large sums of cash to be put aside and it’s unlikely that United will have the funds to do that.
Instead, Atalanta breakthrough star Rasmus Hojlund has emerged as a serious target for the Reds, with the Danish forward impressing some of Europe’s elite clubs with his performances this season.
United are said to be interested in the Danish international and now, it has emerged that Hojlund is emerging as a leading candidate to fill the vacant striker spot at the Theatre of Dreams.
That’s according to the Mirror, who say that United have now stepped up their pursuit of Hojlund after understanding that it may be difficult to convince Tottenham to sell Kane.
As per the report, signing Hojlund could set United back a whopping £40m but at 20 years old, he would join the club with bags of potential and stunning resale value, meaning that the price tag is unlikely to deter the Reds.
Interestingly, Hojlund is represented by the same agency that represents Ten Hag and perhaps that could sway a transfer in United’s favour.
SN’s verdict…
Last year, the priority was to strengthen the midfield and United did just that by signing Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. This year, they cannot afford to let the summer pass without signing at least one striker.
Wout Weghorst, who scored just two goals in all competition over his six-month spell at the club, will leave the club and Anthony Martial’s fitness remains as unreliable as ever.
Marcus Rashford scored 30 goals in all competitions but he was the only consistent goal threat – a big issue Ten Hag will be desperate to resolve.
