Ten Hag confirms plans to sign new goalkeeper regardless of De Gea’s potential contract extension

Erik ten Hag will be on the market for a new goalkeeper this summer to provide competition to David de Gea.

The Spaniard is currently in talks with the club regarding an extended contract on reduced terms, as he currently ranks as Manchester United’s highest earner on a whopping £375,000 per week.

His deal, as it stands, will expire at the end of next month but United have the option of triggering a one-year extension.

Reports have continued to circulate in recent months regarding De Gea’s future between the sticks at Old Trafford and whilst it looks certain that he’ll be retained at the club, he may not retain his position as No.1 after the summer.

His form has often fluctuated across the season and has led to goals being conceded on numerous occasions, whether it be from poor distribution, him not claiming crosses or simple errors.

In Ten Hag’s eyes, this is likely counteracted by the fact that he is the Premier League’s Golden Glove winner after keeping 17 clean sheets across the league campaign.

However, the manager is leaving his options open and will seek an alternative ‘keeper to keep the 32-year-old on his toes.

In a recent interview with The Times, Ten Hag was asked if De Gea would be at the club next season. He responded: “Yes, but I will not say he’ll always be my No.1 because, in a club like Man United, there must be competition in all positions. You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions.”
