Manchester United fear lightning has struck twice as worries over Antony injury emerge

Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of Antony after the winger was withdrawn on a stretcher in the first half of the 4-1 win over Chelsea earlier this week.

The Brazil international is a mainstay in the side under Erik ten Hag and just seven days before the season is wrapped up with the FA Cup final against Manchester City, it seems unlikely that he will be able to feature.

Antony looked to be in agony as he was helped off the pitch and now, it has emerged that United fear that Antony has aggravated the injury which kept him from fulfilling last season with Ajax.

Antony missed the last two months of last season with an ankle injury and subsequently also missed a domestic cup final in the Netherlands.

According to the BBC, there are now fears in the United camp that Antony has sustained a recurrence of that injury, which also kept him from starting pre-season with the rest of the squad at the Amsterdam club.

SN’s verdict…
Injuries have played a significant role in United’s slight drop-off in form and the loss of Antony just days before a big cup final would be a huge blow for Ten Hag.

Having already lost Christian Eriksen, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez to long-term injuries at different points this season, making due without his first-choice figure on the right side is another challenge facing Ten Hag.

Jadon Sancho did, however, impress with his performance on the right side against Chelsea and he could prove to be the best option to replace Antony in the short term.

It remains to be seen how serious Antony’s injury is but Ten Hag will be praying he is fit and available for pre-season.
