Bruno Fernandes statistic further proves United’s need for a clinical striker

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes tops the list for chances created in the Premier League this season.

According to a statistic shared by the league’s Twitter account, the midfielder leads the rankings with 103 chances created. Kieran Trippier comes in second with 101, whilst Kevin De Bruyne is third with 93.

However, despite United’s No.8 having yet another influential season on the pitch, he’s currently registered just seven assists in the league.

There have been countless times during matches in which forwards have put chances created by Fernandes astray, with the most clinical finisher proving to be Marcus Rashford this campaign.

Fernandes has linked up with the Englishman to create 33 chances, though the favour has only been returned by Rashford three times for his vice-captain, which is significantly lower than other dynamic partnerships across the league.

A new striker is desperately needed

All in all, one thing the statistics do prove is that a prolific No.9 has to be top of Erik ten Hag’s transfer shortlist this summer. Being creative is only useful until you have someone on the end of passes or set-pieces to get the ball into the back of the net, and that’s something that United have struggled with consistently lately.

The Reds have scored 49 league goals so far, putting them 10th in the table for goals scored in 2022/2023. They’re behind all their top-four competitors and level with Leicester City, who currently sit in the relegation zone.
