Match report: Late penalty drama sees United taste defeat after frustrating night at the Amex

An injury-time penalty has cost Manchester United at the Amex this evening.

On a thoroughly frustrating night for the Red Devils, missed chances, lack of bookings and late penalty drama will be the talk of the dressing room.

Like so many other times this season, the team were nowhere near as clinical as they should’ve been with several shots barely even challenging Jason Steele.

Andre Marriner had a howler, to be honest. Too apprehensive to blow his whistle or get cards out of his pocket, to then brandishing yellows for nothing challenges.

Luke Shaw had another solid game at centre-back, so it’s unfortunate that the blame will fall on him for giving the spot-kick away, especially so late in the game when we’d have settled for a point on the road.

Alexis Mac Allister converted it easily and picked up a crucial three points for Brighton in their quest for European football. They have now leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa into sixth place, whilst the Reds remain fourth and four points ahead of Liverpool with a game-in-hand.

Next up for the Reds

Next up is another away trip to the London Stadium to take on relegation-nearing West Ham United and anything other than three points will be extremely disappointing, as they’re a very beatable side.
