Manchester United do not view Phil Jones as an option to help solve their ongoing crisis at the back.

According to The Athletic on Monday morning, Jones is played low in the pecking order at United and is not even registered to feature in the Premier League.

The centre-back spent his holidays working out physically in order to be in the best possible shape for pre-season, but he relapsed on the first day of training.

Talk about unlucky – but this has been the story of Jones’ career after a promising start to life at Old Trafford. Now should be his time to get some minutes in the first team with the amount of defensive injuries in the squad.

Jones has yet to feature under Erik ten Hag, which doesn’t bode well for a player soon to be out of contract.

Ten Hag isn’t going to keep any passengers next season. And he’s right not to!

The big question is what next for Jones? Does he drop to the Championship or move abroad? It’s a big risk for any club to take now.
