Erik ten Hag rules Lisandro Martinez out of Sunday’s game but issues promising Marcus Rashford update

Erik ten Hag has provided updates on Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford.

The two centre-backs took their usual spots alongside one another this evening as Manchester United played out the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie with Sevilla.

Marcel Sabitzer netted two sensational goals early on in the tie and with how United were playing, you’d have expected it to be a case of ‘cruise control’. Two own-goals said otherwise, unfortunately, and now the Reds have all the work to do when they travel to Spain next week for the second leg.

Varane was taken off after the interval with an apparent injury. Given his record, a slight knock has supporters concerned about his fitness, so hopefully that turns out to be nothing serious and more of a precautionary substitution.

In the closing stages of the game, Martinez was stretchered off after sustaining a leg injury. Being unable to walk, he was carried off by Sevilla’s Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna, with whom he plays at international level.

Ten Hag looks ahead to Sunday

Post-match, Ten Hag confirmed that Martinez will not be available for Sunday’s trip to face Nottingham Forest, Varane’s involvement is currently unconfirmed, and there is “a chance” Rashford could be fit to feature, as per Jamie Jackson.
