Manchester United have picked up their seventh loss of the Premier League campaign this afternoon after sustaining a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United.
In what’s been a mostly positive season for United so far, where they have shown clear improvement and progression under Erik ten Hag, there has still been the odd result that’s catapulted the club back to reality.
Those results are seemingly always away from home and against clubs in the top half of the table. Old Trafford, if anything, has become more of a ‘fortress’ now than it has been in several seasons gone by.
The first came on the second match of the campaign against Brentford; United conceded four goals in under 40 minutes to round off a dismal 4-0 defeat. Two months later, the Reds suffered a 6-3 loss to rivals Manchester City at the Etihad, with two Blues scoring hat-tricks in a remarkably poor display from Erik ten Hag’s men.
March witnessed one of the most embarrassing days in United’s history. A trip to Anfield saw us concede seven goals to our rivals without offering even one in response. Six goals came in the second half after a tightly-contested first 45 minutes, but the team went on to lose their heads in truly unbelievable fashion.

Despite the positives so far, it’s clear to see that improvement is necessary for United. Today’s result now means that a top-four finish has been made considerably harder.
