Match preview: Reds make trip to face Newcastle in crucial top-four battle on Tyneside

Manchester United will make the trip to Tyneside this weekend to take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.

The match could be pivotal to this campaign’s top-four battle, with both clubs eyeing Champions League football next season.

United head into the clash in third place and three points ahead of the Magpies in fifth, so a win for the Geordies sends them level on points but leading through goal difference.

Tottenham Hotspur currently occupy fourth place on 47 points, though they have played two more games than United and Newcastle.

The latest meetings between the sides

Back in October, United hosted Eddie Howe’s side in a stalemate at Old Trafford for the reverse fixture, with the Reds failing to take their chances and ultimately taking just one point from the match.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 16: Marcus Rashford of Manchester United is challenged by Matt Targett of Newcastle United.

Last month the teams travelled to Wembley Stadium for the Carabao Cup final. It ended 2-0 in United’s favour and ended a six-year trophy drought, which may give us more confidence heading into Sunday’s 4.30pm kick-off.

However, St. James’ Park is undoubtedly one of the more difficult stadiums to pick up a result nowadays. United’s last win there came in 2020 and until February 18, when they lost 2-0 to Liverpool, the Toon had gone 17 league games unbeaten on home turf.
