Manchester United are in the race to sign Watford left-back Harry Amass and according to reports, the Old Trafford club are set to fend off competition to land the highly-rated defender.

Amass, 16, has impressed at Watford and is a regular fixture for the England U16 side, prompting some of the biggest clubs in the nation to express their interest.

According to the Evening Standard, there has been a breakthrough in talks with Amass, who is reportedly keen on leaving the London club despite being on the verge of a first-team debut.

As per the report, the exciting defender views a move to a ‘top academy’ as a better career prospect as opposed to continuing to develop in the Championship.

Watford, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, are unlikely to succeed in their bid to secure an immediate return to the top flight this season.

It’s also claimed that there is a belief that a deal to sign the 16-year-old will be wrapped up soon, with United believing he has what it takes to become a first-team player soon.
