Wout Weghorst explains why Man United loan made him ‘a happy man’

Wout Weghorst joined Manchester United on a six-month loan deal from Burnley in the January transfer window and quite surprisingly, he has had quite an impact.

Weghorst has found the net twice since joining the club but remarkably, he has started every single game and it does not look like that run is coming to an end anytime soon.

United scoured the winter market for strikers following the controversial departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Weghorst was deemed the best short-term solution available.

The 30-year-old has helped offset the burden of waiting for Anthony Martial to recover from his latest injury and he has immediately endeared himself to supporters.

Speaking after linking up with his international team-mates for this month’s set of fixtures, Weghorst was quizzed on his time at United so far and the former Bundesliga star explained why joining the club made him ‘a happy man’.

“Am I living a dream? Certainly. In my opinion, this is the absolute top and one of the largest clubs in the world,” Weghorst told SoccerNews.

“I feel like I’m very much in my place. I am super happy, very happy. I play at a beautiful level and can be of value as a basic player… That makes me a happy man.”

SN’s verdict…
Weghorst sounds like he’s completely aware of the circumstances and may even feel like he’s fortunate to find himself in the situation he’s in.

Of course, he would have liked to score more goals so far but you cannot knock the effort he is putting in. Not a blade of grass is left untouched when he’s playing.

Unfortunately, it does feel like a permanent transfer is far too optimistic but having already won his first senior prize at United, he will be hoping to mark the six-month spell with one or two more.
