Sevilla sack manager before facing Manchester United in Europa League quarter-finals

Sevilla have sacked manager Jorge Sampaoli as head coach, just weeks before facing Manchester United.

Despite reaching the last-eight of the Europa League, Sevilla’s league results have them sitting 14th in the table.

United are due to face the Spaniards in their European quarter-final next month; the first leg will be at Old Trafford on April 13 and the second leg is the following week on April 20 at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Jose Luis Mendilibar, who spent over 15 years coaching in La Liga, will now take charge of the club until June.

New manager bounce a concern?

The Reds have fallen victim to ‘new manager bounce’ several times, more recently against Leeds United, when they drew 2-2 after going 2-0 down, and when they lost 3-1 against Aston Villa in Unai Emery’s first game at Villa Park.

However, United know the importance of reaching the semi-finals in the Europa League and Erik ten Hag will have his players prepared for whatever challenges Sevilla may offer.
