Erik ten Hag keen on France star amid Harry Maguire uncertainty

Erik ten Hag is drawing up plans for this summer’s transfer window and although the priority will most likely be to add firepower in the final third, the Dutchman will also be keen on strengthening other areas.

Ten Hag signed two defenders last summer and Lisandro Martinez, who followed him from Amsterdam in a big-money move, has immediately become a fan-favourite at Old Trafford.

The Argentine international has forged a seemingly unbreakable bond with Raphael Varane at the heart of United’s defence but there is little depth beyond that.

The limited options at centre-back has meant that Ten Hag has trialled Luke Shaw in the middle on a number of occasions, most famously in the 2-1 derby win over Manchester City in January.

Now, it is being reported that Ten Hag is keen on signing France and Monaco star Axel Disasi, who was part of the French squad that fell in the 2022 World Cup final.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who say that United have stepped up their interest in Disasi after initially holding talks over the defender in January.

As per the report, those early talks have been extended and United are now one of several Premier League clubs to have made contact with Monaco.

Disasi has two years remaining on his current deal at the Ligue 1 giants but it is claimed that should Monaco’s £44m valuation be met, they would be open to a deal.

Harry Maguire is currently the third-choice centre-back under Ten Hag and with two years remaining on his contract, his future at Old Trafford is looking increasingly bleak.

The United skipper recently started in back-to-back games for the first time since the start of the season and it is likely that he could explore a move away from the club.

Victor Lindelof has also been used sparingly this season, with Phil Jones set to leave on a free transfer. Eric Bailly is expected to return from his season-long on at Marseille as the French club has shown no signs of exercising their right to purchase the Ivorian.
