Erik ten Hag sends supportive message to Anthony Martial over his future

Anthony Martial has missed a lot of football this season due to fitness problems. The tock appeared to be ticking with just over a year left on his contract.

Contrary to widespread belief, Erik ten Hag has told Anthony Martial he isn’t fighting for his Manchester United future despite his ongoing fitness issues this season.

Martial recently returned to first team training but I don’t think anyone will be getting excited about a potential return just yet. Even if he does return, the inevitable question is for how long before another injury rules him out of action?

The Frenchman has missed 30 games this term through five separate absences.

Ten Hag insists he isn’t yet at a point where he needs to prove his fitness and form to have a long-term future at the club. That would suggest the manager has a different understanding of the situation and still rates Martial as a player he wants to keep at the club.

“I don’t think it is the right moment to be the case. I believe in him, every time he is available he really contributes to the team performance, the level of the team is upgrading when he is available,” Ten Hag told reporters, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“We are working with him to get fit and be available.”

Hopefully Ten Hag can get Martial back on the pitch and scoring goals before the end of the season.
