Danny Murphy backs Manchester United forward to become captain

Former Liverpool man Danny Murphy is recognised as a pundit nowadays and thinks Marcus Rashford has what it takes to captain Manchester United.

Make no mistake about it, Marcus Rashford has bounced back this season.

There were calls from some fans to sell Rashford last season. Lots of knee jerk opinions and people looking for players to blame for bad results. Now, the tables have turned, and Rashford is renowned as one of the best attackers in world football.

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t swap him for anyone right now.

The only issue is his current contract at Old Trafford expires next year, however, Sky Sports claim Erik ten Hag has prioritised a new contract for the 25-year-old star which is good news for fans.

Rashford has scored 25 goals and assisted a further nine in 42 appearances for United this season, and his form since the World Cup has raised serious questions about why Gareth Southgate didn’t play him more for England out in Qatar. I think we’ve benefited from that.

Despite Ten Hag making it clear recently that Bruno Fernandes would retain the captain’s armband in Harry Maguire’s absence for the next few months, the role for permanent captain has not been confirmed and we probably won’t know until the start of next season.

Murphy believes Rashford has what it takes to become club captain.

“Rashford would be an ideal for United considering where they are at the moment in Erik ten Hag’s team development,” Murphy wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“Being a striker isn’t always the most natural position for a captain, but I think Rashford compensates in other areas.

“He’s clearly an automatic choice and becoming an excellent communicator on behalf of the club, confident in front of the microphone and camera. Importantly, he has become an elite forward and is clearly enjoying his football.

“People may question whether the armband would be a distraction. I believe he’d thrive on the extra responsibility.”
