Paul Scholes urges Erik ten Hag to rest two key players after Europa League victory

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was in the BT Sport studio to have his say on Manchester United vs Real Betis.

The Red Devils saw out a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford against the Spanish side but still have to finish the job next week when they travel to the Benito Villamarin Stadium for the second leg of the last-16 tie.

Scholes is seemingly always critical of United nowadays, though, in fairness, he was pivotal to the club’s ongoing successes under Sir Alex Ferguson, and ultimately wants to see the team return to the same glory.

The former midfielder highlighted Casemiro and Luke Shaw’s performances, with the latter being taken off in the closing stages of the game, and has urged Erik ten Hag to give the players a rest next week.

With a three-goal advantage, United will be favourites to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition, so it may give Ten Hag breathing space and an opportunity to drop several figures to the bench.

He said, via BT Sport: “just think with Ten Hag… he doesn’t seem to make many changes, whatever the situation is in games. I think he likes having players having rhythm in the game. But he’d have to think with the schedule they’ve had and amount of games, these players need a rest now. I thought Luke Shaw looked like he needed a rest, Casemiro possibly needs a rest.

“Bringing these young players in, giving them a taste and experience of European football, hopefully it would send them in good stead for the future.”
