Manchester United scouting two goalkeepers amid David de Gea contract situation

The end of the season is approaching and thus, Erik ten Hag will be drawing up plans for the off-season and transfer rumours will begin to intensify.

The Dutchman oversaw a busy first summer in charge of the club, signing six players last year. Ten Hag is, however, said to be keen on strengthening his side further and there are a couple of departments United are in need of strengthening.

United are highly likely to target a long-term striker option this summer, with Wout Weghorst’s six-month loan unlikely to be made permanent.

Additionally, Ten Hag will be keen on adding another midfielder to the squad as United remain light in that area despite the signings of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

David de Gea could also be replaced as the Spaniard has just four months remaining on his current contract and there are no signs of an extension just yet.

De Gea has received heavy criticism for his ability on the ball and his distribution – a quality Ten Hag values from his shot-stoppers.

According to The Telegraph, the Reds are in talks with De Gea over fresh terms on reduced wages, having been the club’s best earner for the majority of the time since he extended his contract in 2019.

Despite ongoing negotiations over a new deal, it’s also reported that United are actively scouting two goalkeepers as possible replacements – Brentford’s David Raya and FC Porto’s Diogo Costa.

SN’s verdict…
Raya has just one year remaining on his contract at the London club and would be far more attainable than Costa, who recently penned a long-term deal with the Portuguese giants.

De Gea’s long-term future will not be at Old Trafford but it’s plausible that he extends his contract for another two years and that would most likely be the last big contract of his career.

A two-year extension would see him remain at the club until 2025, which would mark a stunning 14-year stay at the club.
