Manchester United could rival Arsenal for World Cup winning striker this summer

Manchester United could reportedly pursue Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez this summer.

That is according to transfer reporter Peter O’Rourke, who thinks the striker suits the profile Erik ten Hag will be looking for at the end of the season.

It’s no secret that a new No.9 is required at Old Trafford soon. Anthony Martial has missed roughly 24 games in all competitions due to injuries this season – far from ideal for your first-choice up front. Injuries and fitness concerns have been a prevailing issue for the 27-year-old throughout his time as a Red and it looks as though Ten Hag’s patience has worn too thin to keep the Frenchman beyond this season.

Martial’s lack of availability along with Cristiano Ronaldo’s notorious exit forced the Reds’ hierarchy into signing Wout Weghorst on loan in January. The towering Dutch striker has made 10 consecutive starts for the club, registering just one goal and one assist in that time.

His off-the-ball movement and pressing does contribute greatly to the team, but he simply has to be providing more goals. That is the main reason he was signed and he is yet to show that clinical edge in front of goal.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke weighed in on Ten Hag’s striker search.

“He’s [Lautaro Martinez] a top player, a world-class striker, and I think that’s what Man Utd will be looking for this summer; a regular goalscorer who can help aid Erik ten Hag’s rebuilding process at Old Trafford.”

Premier League leaders Arsenal also have reported interest in the 25-year-old, who became a world champion with Argentina in Qatar last year.
