Manchester United have entered advanced negotiations with Alejandro Garnacho over a new and improved deal to keep him at the club.
The 18-year-old has burst onto the scene under Erik ten Hag, who has been keen to reward him with game time for his impressive performances, but still manage his minutes so that the youngster is eased into first-team football.
According to Telegraph Sport, Garnacho is close to signing a new contract with the club. His current contract is set to expire in 2025, though United are looking to agree terms that benefit both parties; they can tie down his future at Old Trafford, whilst he will receive a significant pay increase from his current £7,000 earnings.
United have learnt from past mistakes
The report also suggests that the Red Devils’ hierarchy have been adamant about avoiding a situation similar to what happened with Adnan Januzaj. Back in 2013, the then-youngster was rewarded with a lucrative new five-year contract under David Moyes but failed to meet the expectations both the club and supporters had of him. He departed for Real Sociedad five years later for a fee of £9 million.
Garnacho is currently creating similar levels of optimism and excitement amongst fans due to the bright spark he adds every time he steps onto the pitch. He currently has two goals and five assists to his name across all competitions, with his latest assist being perhaps his most important yet, as he created the winning goal for Marcus Rashford in the Manchester derby and became the youngest player to do so.
